What are the different types of hair loss?

There are various reasons and factors for hair loss. These are the most common types of hair loss.

  1. Involutional alopecia- This naturally occurs as we grow older and more hairs go into the resting phase of the hair cycle. The hair becomes thinner, shorter and decrease in number.

  1. Alopecia areata- this is an autoimmune condition and can start suddenly. It leads to patchy hair loss and in some people, can result in total baldness. However, in a few years the hair growth restarts in 90% of sufferers.

  1. Androgenic alopecia- this is the most common type of hair loss and can occurring men (male pattern baldness) and women (female pattern baldness). It a genetic condition and is due to effect of dihydrotestosterone on the hair follicle

  1. Traction Alopecia- This is caused damage to your hair follicle by tension or constant pulling due to tight ponytails, buns, weaves, hair extensions and tight braids such as cornrows or dreadlocks. It can be made worse by using chemicals on the hair, hair clips and head scarfs.

  1. Telogen Effluvium- this occurs when a large number of hair enter the resting phase at the same time thus causing shedding. Stress and medications are the some of the causes.

  1. Scarring alopecia- this is when the hair is permanently lost due scarring conditions that results in the destruction of the hair follicle. This includes cellulitis, acne, lupus and lichen planus.
