Being nervous of the dentist is a very common fear, and you would be surprised how many people avoid going to the dentist due to the fear of past trauma, the worry of pain and in some cases it could even be certain smells and sounds of the dentist that can be quite triggering.
We have put together a few strategies that may help you reduce and manage your anxiety.

Communicate with your dentist
Make your dentist aware of your fear, dentists are trained to handle situations such as dentophobia. By making your dentist aware of the fear you have, this will then allow them to take the appropriate steps in making you feel more comfortable and at ease.

Ask about conscious sedation options
Sedation is a very beneficial way to reduce anxiety and discomfort during dental procedures. Sedation can also be used to minimize the pain and make the treatment a lot more tolerable. Unlike general anesthesia we use conscious sedation as this helps to keep our patients awake and and able to respond to their dentist as well as allowing them to feel relaxed and less aware of the procedure.

Establishing a signal
Agreeing a hand signal with your dentist may be a good way of communicating if during the treatment you are feeling anxious and possibly need a break. You can take as many breaks as you need and take the appointment slowly. Remember your are in charge!

Start small
Start small by possibly coming in to see us for a general consultation or a smaller procedure such as teeth cleaning. This can help build trust with your dentist and get you familiar with you new environment as well as the smells and sounds that you may experience while being here.

Distractions
Try bringing headphones to your appointment and using them during treatment. These often tend to be a good form of distraction as you can listen to your favorite music or even a podcast to ease your mind from your surroundings. These are also a good way of cancelling out the noises around you. Some people find stress relief gadgets like a fidget spinner or stress ball helpful in keeping their mind occupied during treatment.

Relaxation Techniques
Practice deep breathing techniques to calm your nerves before and during your visit. Inhale deeply through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth. Try picture yourself in a calm, relaxing place or imagine the appointment going smoothly. Positive visualization can help reduce anxiety.
Tense and release different muscle groups in your body to help release tension.

Positive Reinforcement
After each dental visit, treat yourself to something you enjoy as a reward for facing your fear. Celebrate small wins, whether it’s making it through a cleaning or scheduling a follow-up appointment, take time to acknowledge your progress.
