As the holiday season approaches, we know how easy it can be to neglect your teeth, especially if you plan on spending Christmas abroad this year. We have created 10 oral health tips to make life a little easier for you.

ree

Always pack a travel sized dental kit.

Include a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, and a small case to keep everything clean and organized.

ree

Pack a toothbrush cover.

Covers prevent germs from landing on the bristles, but make sure it has air holes so the brush can dry properly and avoid bacterial build up.

ree

Use sugar free gum

Gum stimulates saliva, helping neutralize acids, we recommend keeping some sugar free gum with you as this comes in very handy when immediate brushing is not possible.

ree

Do NOT throw your toothbrush loosely into your handbag.

Protect your toothbrush if it is going to be taken out and about with you. You can do so by placing it in a travel bag or zip lock bag. This helps to prevent the spread of bacteria.

ree

Rinse using a fluoride mouthwash

It is not always easy or convenient to go and brush your teeth during all the Christmas festivities, we recommend giving your mouth a thorough rinse to remove any sticky sugars from things such as sweets, and sugary drinks.

ree

Tooth friendly snacks

Opt for nuts, cheese, apples, and water instead of sticky candies or sugary drinks while on the road. Limit sugary snacks to after meals to reduce the impact of sugar/acid attack on the teeth.

ree

Maintain your normal brushing schedule

Travelling over the holiday period tends to disrupt a lot of peoples schedules, this is something that we see quite often. It is very important to stick to your regular routine of brushing your teeth twice a day. Sweets, candy and sugary drinks tend to cause a lot of plaque build up so sticking to your normal brushing schedule is key.

ree

Carry a spare backup toothbrush

We recommend always carrying a spare toothbrush, the reason being is during travelling toothbrushes can easily be lost, misplaced or forgotten. By packing a spare this prevents you from having to purchase a toothbrush from a hotel or supermarket which tend to have more weaker bristles.

ree

Remember to pack your retainer or night guard

It's important to pack your night guard or retainer when traveling to prevent teeth from shifting, and to protect the appliance from damage, loss, or contamination. Consistent use is essential to maintain orthodontic progress or dental health, and keeping a protective case in your carry on bag prevents it form being crushed, bent or accidentally thrown away.
