Painful gums are quite a common problem and quite often overlooked or dismissed. Gum pain, swelling or bleeding can be caused by a variety of reasons and shouldn’t be ignored. Listed are the most common reasons why gum pain could be bothering you.
Rough brushing & flossing – of course good dental hygiene involves brushing and flossing but it should never be in an aggressive way to cause gum damage or sensitive gums. Make sure your brush bristles are not too stiff and harsh for your gums (as this can contribute using a hard brush) and ensure you gently brush your teeth.
Gum disease – red, swollen, bleeding gums? There may be a chance you have gum disease (periodontal disease). This is typically a result of not flossing and brushing your teeth often or well enough. While the most common type of gum disease is gingivitis, caught early on, it can be reversed with proper oral hygiene. More severe cases of gum disease is periodontitis which can lead to eventual tooth loss, however good upkeep of oral hygiene is key, and this means brushing and flossing twice a day and regular use of mouthwash.
Tobacco related products – smoking cigarettes and cigars can damage your gums and your overall oral hygiene, however even chewing tobacco can cause further harm. To reduce irritation and risks of cancer and damaged oral health, it is recommended to cut down and stop using tobacco products. Allergies – ingredients used in toothpaste, mouthwash and other oral hygiene products may sometimes contain products which individuals can be allergic to. This may also be another reason why your gums can hurt. If you think you may be allergic to a product or ingredient, try to determine which it is by process of elimination and then discontinue using it. Vitamin deficiency – good oral health is supported by proper nutrition, which includes making sure you are achieving daily recommended intakes of vitamins B and C. Vitamin deficiencies can lead to a number of conditions including scurvy which can cause swollen and sore gums with other symptoms.
