HELP- DENTAL DECAY!

Dental decay (or caries) are holes that form in the teeth.

Dental decay happens because of plaque, which is sticky and clings to the teeth. Plaque is a combination of bacteria, acid, food debris and saliva. Acid is formed when you eat carbohydrates like bread, sweets, sugary drinks, milk, fruits cakes etc. The acids in plaque dissolve enamel and as a result dental decay is created.

Dental caries can happen to anyone from young children to adults!

  • To prevent tooth decay brush twice a day for two minutes morning and evening with fluoride toothpaste. Spit your toothpaste out and don’t rinse.

  • Clean in between teeth with floss or interdental brushes.

  • Avoid snacking on carbohydrates such as sweets, crisps, juices etc. as they can remain on the tooth surface.

  • Try to brush your teeth soon after if any sticky foods are eaten.

  • Visit your dentist regularly. At Best Health Clinics, Hornchurch, we can advice you on any changes of the enamel. The dentist might advice you to have coatings applied on your back teeth called Fissure sealants to help prevent decay occurring or having fluoride varnish applied to strengthen your teeth.
